Alpha Chapter's Beginning
Delta Kappa Gamma Society was formed May 11, 1929 in Austin, Texas. Alabama State was founded seventeen months later in Montgomery, Alabama, December 19, 1931. The installation of the Alabama State Founders was conducted at the Jefferson Davis Hotel. Four of the state founders, Mary Henderson, Ruth Higgins, Norma Smith, and Lucretia Wyman were residents of Montgomery, and they organized the Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma February 27, 1932. The following were initiated as charter members of Alpha Chapter:
Since the founding of Alpha Chapter, 101 other chapters have been organized in Alabama. Alpha Chapter awards a $500 grant-in-aid to a junior or senior female college student preparing to enter the teaching profession. Alpha Chapter’s mission continues to promote professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.
